If the spacer is made of plastic, you may be able to get a long drill bit and drill a hole in the spacer. You can then find a long screw to screw into the spacer and pull it out. I once had an after market delrin spacer get stuck. I had some old springs, so I cut a chisel like slope on the end that was sharp enough to dig into the spacer. It worked, but only after a good bit of twisting and gouging with the spring.

FPoole, good idea. I'm going to try throughout degreasing it with break cleaner and see if I can get something to stick to it and pull it out. The spacer is delren I believe. If that doesn't work, the drill bit will be the next thing on the agenda. When I pushed the spacer into the piston, it felt like there was a rib on the shaft or the piston wall. I know I felt some brief resistance when the spacer was most of the way into the piston and thought if I ever have to get this out it's going to be tough. Haha.
