If he has taken a poke at someone then in my mind the outcome is quite clear. He should be sacked. That would be the fate of anyone else in employment. It's quite possible that he should also be prosecuted.

I have to admit I don't watch Top Gear on any kind of regular basis but of the bits I've seen Clarkson is better in small doses.

Agreed, IF he hit someone he should end up in court (unless its self defence) just the same as any ordinary bloke.
I enjoy some of the older episodes, like the one with the Toyota pickup but some of it is just ridiculous tripe, a race between a skydiver and a car? Pathetic! The tractor episode where JC blows holes in a field? Predictable and childish.
The whole format is just to massage his ego because he's impotent I reckon.

My sentiments most entirely, seriously I hope he sells himself to the USA where he can luxuriate in self gratification with the likes of Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan et al, let the pond life read the Sun (subsidise it if required) but allow the educated classes to insist that the BBC reinstates itself as a serious and stable pillar of straightforward reportage

Having said that I can very well imagine that if you ran a demographic survey across owners of air guns and Top Gear fans you would find some very strong and statistically valid consistencies :o
Both are fundamentally catering to / targeting the same segment of society
