I can tell none of you are engineers

The head size of most of the JSB offerings are in the region of 4.48/4.49 or 5.48/5.49. The tails of the pellets are larger.

When fired from a springer the initial air pressure will spread the tail of the pellet into the rifling and will also compact the head.(there are pics around on the web). With a PCP the air is introduced more gently so the same doesn't happen.

It's impossible for the pellets to even be round with 500 in a tin all rubbing together. Especially with JSB/derivatives as they are made from quite a soft lead compound. One of the reasons for their success.

Your barrels will vary more than .01mm along their length, especially at the choked end.

This is all fine and well Ray but the fact of the matter is that they group differently based on the size they put on the label, so there must be a variation somewhere...

I have done blind testing on this and the guns have always grouped better with the said size on the label being the common denominator..

Must be voodoo :?

They vary batch to batch and die to die.

If people understood what is involved in separating items to .01mm they would take a different view. There is not a single item on any rifle that is manufactured to such tolerances, let alone the soft lead pellet you put in it. Your barrel will alter by more than .01mm dependent on temperature.

Maybe the size on the tin is just an indicator to which die it came from, not that there actually measuring pellets but more that it came from a 4.51 or 4.53 die or whatever??

Could a die not be made to such a precision size?

Hi, I may have sorted my own problem - I was told about "Pellet Perfect" website with a comprehensive range of different pellets.

You can buy them in packs of just 25 pellets - so I can try an assortment to find which is best for me.

Possibly, not the cheapest but I only intend to trial a select few.

Hope this helps & thanks for all your replies.

Trouble is they want a minimum order and they charge heavily for postage then theres the weather it took me several hundred shots and many outings with falcon accuracy plus before i decided they are an indoor pellet, i stick to trusted brands for accuracy shooting, after all ive got a five hundred pound prosport why wouldnt i want the finest pellet

My ProSport loves AA 4.51 and groups well at 50 yd but with AA 4.52 they are all over the gaff (tested several times) I do agree that there is no way manufacturers can produce soft lead pellets to such tolerances but there must be something in it. As already mentioned, you can't argue with the results.
Guns had = Webley Tracker , TX 200 HC , Fenman , Rapid 7 ,Rapid 17 FT, Daystate Hunsman FTR , Ripley AR5 S , Ripley AR4 Cougar,
Gun got = AA Pro-Sport .177 (blueprinted with a tiger stripe Walnut stock), AA FTP 900.

At last been able to sight the scope and start to get to grip with my new TX200HC.

Was using Daystate Sovereign 15.9 grain (.22) and achieving reasonable but not brilliant consistancy, put this down to it being a very new air rifle.

By chance tried some Crossman Magnums 14.3 grain, and wow spot on time after time at 25 yards!
Only downside, so far, is they are a bit fiddly to load being a shorter pellet and I am naturally ham fisted.

Look out Mr Ratty, your days are very limited...hehehe

Yes!!!, I know that all air rifle barrels are not the same even on the same make and model rifle, the barrel diameter can be larger or smaller and the rifling is also a little different its like a finger print....please!, see link bellow very interesting reading and info indeed, and proves the point in regards to head size of pellet ect.

see bellow link.
http://www.vogelusa.com/pellettesting.htm

Therefore, pellet testing, matching amo for one's barrel is a must to achieve great accuracy, Whatever people say about pellet head size and batch no, I do believe without any doubt it really do's make a difference to accuracy, For many years no matter if using air guns or firearms finding the perfect pellet/bullet for ones rifling and diameter of your barrel will be as important as shooters skill and technique to achieve and strive for best accuracy.

Having tried and tested just about every pellet I could get my hands on over the years I can say without any doubt the best pellet ever,,, in any of my 4, Air Arms spring rifles which include TX200HC,1 and TX200HC,2 prosport and TX200 full length.

The JSB EXACT EXPRESS,4.52 787,gr, and AIR ARMS EXPRESS,,, have given ultimate accuracy even out to extreme long ranges at 90+ yards. this pellet has even gone through the same hole @ 50 yards on a very calm wind free humid summer day.

I highly recommend you try and test JSB EXACT EXPRESS and Air Arms EXPRESS pellets in you Tx200's and prosport.

The JSB express 4.52 AND AIR ARMS EXPRESS,,, also work incredible outstanding long range accuracy in my Weihrauch barrels my HW,100T'S loves them and so do's my 97KT and HW,77, HW,45 pistol and Alecto, top accuracy amazing pellet.
