.177 or .22 target shooting

Sun Mar 08, 2015 6:22 pm

Hi,after visiting hereward field target yesterday,I came away feeling rather down that I owned a .22 tx200hc, as everyone had .177,plus the fact all had p.c.p s,what I would like to know is ,can a tx200hc. 22 hold its own against p.cp. s.177....,I did feel that I was the odd one out,had a good day ,your thoughts would be welcome on this matter,

There is no difference in accuracy between .177 and .22.

There is however a great deal of difference needed in the ability to shoot accurately with .22 over .177.
Being a flatter trajectory in .177 your range finding is less onerous and this is the key. With HFT there may be .22 classes so you are shooting against fellow users. FT is probably exclusively .177 as dialing in .22 would take up too much adjustment on your scope and using .22 would be pretty hopeless.

You will also find that PCP's have the edge over springers.

if you know the range of the target, and your aim points, it wont make a scrap of difference :)
.22 will hit the target very marginally harder than .177, but that wont make a scrap of difference either

If its any consolation. I am a middle of the road ability shooter with a pcp (HW 100) and a TX 200 Mk 3. When I use the TX in a club comp I can come around mid-way up the pcp scores (on a good day). Used to have a .22 springer and as has been said, get to know your aim points and you are away. Always nice to beat a pcp with a springer!

i find a .22 springer to be smoother than 1.77 springer due to the 1.77 needing a more loaded spring.

but if you are a moderate spring shooter a .22 will be more forgiving in hold and recoil ( if set up well ) for you than a harsher firing 1.77 springer , do not get me wrong most of the top 1.77 springers can be just as smooth.

you need to set out targets at 20yrd 25yrd 30yrd 35yrd 40yrd 45yrd etc and practice your mildots hold over at each distance until you know your rifle well .

Absolutely correct.

I would add in 10yds, 12 yds and 15yds.

The problem is that although the above will let you know your holdover/holdunder you have to be proficient at estimating the distances correctly to know your aimpoint. For a .22 this is more important as it has a loopier trajectory and your aimpoints will be quite a bit wider than a .177.

FT is my sport. it is universally .177 for the tradjectory issues. i started with a 1980s springer with open sights. put a telecopic sight on and improved. i made the switch to .177 and things changed. the PCP and piston powered weapons have seperate classes so no issue there, but to have a greater opposition PCP is the way to go as most use these.
but have a go use what you have, if you enjoy it you can change to something a little more suitable for the job. the scope is the biggest part of the sport, the rifle second. just get a taste of it first as price of FT equipment is high. go to a club, many members will let you have a go with there setup, and help with advise on first rifle etc.

What's your first name by the way?
Right, with a .22 springer you are at a disadvantage, no one will tell you otherwise. What you need to do is realise that you won't beat the PCP boys with their little .177s but you can improve your performance, particularly rangefinding. Improve your own personal scores and forget competing with the .177s, one day you'll get a surprise and find you've overtaken a few of the others and they will be really cheesed off!
Just practice with your rifle and get as good as you can, enjoy it and if the bug bites you can always buy a .177 TX.
And before you say .177 PCP, have a look at the scores of the last AAOC meet, a PCP won but the springers were well up the board. ;)
