Robert Lane regulator installed in my S410

Tue Aug 23, 2016 6:56 pm

Hi,

Finally got round to fitting a regulator I purchased a short while ago to my S410 Classic in .177 calibre. Pretty much followed the RL instructions and used his 'basic' pot and new spring. Re-assembled with my standard AA hammer spring and adjusted to 11.8 (JSB Heavies) using the venturi. Boy was it thirsty and I reckon I would be getting about 70 shots maximum. I had to calculate that value as the cylinder had various bits of plastic placed in it to reduce the amount of air used during any setup sessions and I was only filling to 150 bar! Anyway second attempts had me collapse a coil on the standard spring and this gave me a figure close to 12ft.lbs with fine tuning done on the venturi again to 11.8 ft.lbs. With consumption of air during firing much reduced I calculated that this in theory should give about 110 to 120 shots and I would have been happy at that. Anyway with the plastic item filling remove from the cylinder and a 200 bar fill I carried a full shot string and this is the result:-

About 135 shots within a 12fps band with another 5 at least still useful just after that. This is the graph before the fitment showing 69 shots within the same 12 fps 'sweet spot' :-

I think it was worth it overall as I appreciate the extra shot count and fill to max and forget power curve attitude it gives. Still shoots spot on also. Hardest bit about it was polishing the inside of the cylinder so that the regulator sealed ok and I would probably buy a brake cylinder hone to do this next time (about £10 from the bay). Maybe I got lucky but for me the whole thing was a fairly painless experience one I had gotten over the fear of drilling the cylinder vent hole :o

Been toying with the idea of doing mine along with an anti bounce hammer from Mr Lane.

I have just given mine a full strip down and found a bit of valve extrusion so machined the face of the valve flat again. I need to run a full string through the chrono to see what shape my power curve is.

The results you have there are very impressive. Giving me itchy fingers now looking at your graphs.

Much appreciated posting up your results as it helps others Iike me make up their mind as to what route to go down.

Good result there mate. I fitted an Altaros to mine, I haven't done a full string but as I only use the TDR for hunting I'm very happy with the consistency I get on the 30 or so shots I take.
By the way, that includes checking my zero, not attempts at rabbits.

Thanks Raj and Roger. Took a little while to get round to fitting it but glad I took up your offer Rog. Well chuffed with the outcome.

Hi,

These are my latest findings of my regged classic in .177

I've not had much chance to properly test this rifle at the farm mostly down to crap weather and the fact that for squirelling (the farmers pet hate) I use my .22 carbine. Anyway weather good on Sunday with zero wind and had lots of free time to give it a good work out. Cutting to the quick targets at up to 25 Yards were pretty much one hole. 30 Yard ones were very small cloverleafs of I'd guess circa 4mm ctc and 50 yard groups were stupidly single hole tight at about 8mm ctc. Whats more I was able to repeat this many times and I'm no target shooter. It was always accurate but I hadn't realised it was this good. It's so quiet as well and sounds like you are firing it with no air in the cylinder.

On arrival back home I thought I would just check power level as it had now possibly settled down a bit. These figures are a 20 shot string I did with the same JSB Heavies I had used:-

714 712 712 713 715 713 712 713 713 715 714 713 713 712 713 712 714 714 713 713

No wonder it was shooting spot on. Just 3 fps spread over 20 shots with pellets straight from the tin. Chuffed or what.

Well that's sold it to me! Order on it's way to Mr Lane.
Is that a Robert Lane reg only Mark...or anti bounce hammer too?
Also - Which spring did you collapse a coil on?
Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim,

No Anti-bounce fitted, just the RL reg, as this classic rifle didn't take much setting up. Coil collapsed, by about 5mm or so, was the hammer one. Did it by heating up to cherry red on the end while holding it with pliers near that end so as not to loose the temper on the spring further down. Pushed the end of the glowing spring with a knife I think to keep it flat and then quenched it. This gave me 12.5 with the venturi open so I just throttled it down slightly to 11.7 I think. So quiet now and as you see very accurate and consistent. Some people trim bits of the coil of and then re-profile the end to get it flat again. Maybe I was just lucky with my first attempt.

Have since done my carbine one and get about 75 shots. This one though I think would benefit from the anti-bounce as it sounds slightly 'farty'. Damned accurate and better shot count than the previous 45 or so in the sweet spot though. It was harder to get this one right(ish) though with many stripdowns so be prepared to take your time.

End results in both cases were worth it though.

P.S Have tried a reg in my .22 but didn't think the gains justified it as it has a pretty flat power curve anyway and I limit my hunting range with it.

Hope tis helps

Mark
