tinbum kit in twangy hw98

Tue Mar 03, 2015 4:57 pm

ive just put a timbum kit ( top hat and spring guide ) plastic set up. supposed to help stop the twang .

but its still very twangy maybe i tiny tiny bit better , but it was not worth striping the rifle for, any way i give all the bits a good clean and set it up to 11.10 fpe as it was a bit high before , so not a complete wast of time and £20.

maybe it might shoot more consistent when its run in a bit , who knows,

Have you got some accurate digital calipers? If you measure up the outside of the spring and the inside of the piston you may find you have enough room for a sleeve around the spring, that usually cures it.

thanks for that, but as long as it groups well i will leave it as it is singing its signature tune , the one they are famous for,
i was a bit disappointed the kit did not make that much difference though,

well at least we know now,

You could always try some spring tar, some have used Millers red rubber grease with good results but personally I'm dubious of the stuff.

I have a TBT kit which was a perfect ( tight ) fit for my ProSport and also treated the spring to some red rubber grease. It's as quiet as a springer can be now and sweet to shoot.
Guns had = Webley Tracker , TX 200 HC , Fenman , Rapid 7 ,Rapid 17 FT, Daystate Hunsman FTR , Ripley AR5 S , Ripley AR4 Cougar,
Gun got = AA Pro-Sport .177 (blueprinted with a tiger stripe Walnut stock), AA FTP 900.

My hw98 was embarrassingly twangy and the tinbum sorted it was the spring a good fit on the guides mine was to tight so I sanded them down slightly to alow them to turn on the spring also polished the spring ends and lube the slip disc ,if this doesn't sort it try a Ptfe sheet as stated in an earlier post that will deff do the trick,stokie99

i know this may sound daft ................

but what a bout using a condom to stretch over the spring then put a hole in the end then put the top hat in trapping the condom and do the same for the other end with the spring guide ,
if it was a tight stretch a cross the spring it would not get trapped within the spring when its cocked.
and they come pre oiled .

do you think it could stop the twanging,
just need to find some very small ones , any one you know ( just joking )

but it might work as they are very tough and thin , that should fit in the piston ok, and stop grease flinging about off the spring.

No mate it would last 2seconds you need to look at eBay in hunting for ptfe sheets people sell them pre cut or if you have enough room plastic milk bottles the big ones cut down if you use rubber grease or tar your ftlb will drop significantly if not used very lightly people tend to slap it on as a cure and it kills the power if you paint it onto the spring lightly this can make a difference my 98 has a little rubber grease on and is twang free and shoots at a very nice 10.5ftlb any higher would make the gun harsher to shoot in 177 hope this helps stokie99
Ps I have seen the scopes down dolphin I quit like the hawk varmint
Pps millers red rubber grease is good stuff if used sparingly and dosent fling off the spring but it has to be millers

ive got it down to 10.95 -11.10 fpe
i will look at how tight the guides are first then maybe a sleeve,
compared to the tx there is no bearings ( plastic ring guides ) on the piston , so the whole lot could chatter metal to metal in the chamber ,
the tx is a better set up no wonder its so smooth,
