s400 with home built NV unit

Sun Mar 29, 2015 10:19 pm

Hi All,

Just thought I'd show you my superb .177 s400 carbine with a thumbhole stock and Leapers scope with home built NV unit. It's a great snug fit and deadly accurate.

Thanks mate, yes it's certainly up to the job.

I used a tuned .22 B20 springer for a few years and it kept the freezer ticking over nicely but I transformed my results with the .177 pcp above this past two years, then I set up the NV unit last April after mediocre results only lamping and never looked back..! I would certainly recommend one. Mine gives a clear picture out to at least 150 yards for spotting on the torches high power setting but I only ever use it on medium or low out to around 50 and 25 yards respectively and cost me £105. I already had a drive battery and charger or it would have been around £130.

I wondered how much I'd use NV but I found I extend my twilight sessions up to around midnight with it. I used to really enjoy going after rabbits from about two hours before nightfall, I always got enough and thought it great seeing them hop out after a little wait. Now I have 4 hour sessions instead of two, the downside is I can get a little inundated with rabbits sometimes..!! I don't like tempting the girlie to start on about there's not enough freezer space for anything else so end up preparing loads to give away..

A really fun thing I've experienced very often with it is seeing other wildlife close up. Badgers, owls, mice, voles and foxes have all come within 20 yards of me, some a lot closer. The stories I had to tell probably made me look like I was making it up a lot of the time but it's surprising what moves at night around your shooting ground..
