Invincible squirrel

Sun Nov 20, 2016 9:03 pm

So after a rather successful days hunt at the end of the day I found a grey squirrel at a pheasant feeders so after creeping in to 18 yards of the target I shot it straight behind the eye after a few minutes of waiting for anymore to come I went too retrieve the quarry and to my dismay it was breathing and clinging to the feeder leg so I immediately placed a point blank threw the back of its head and now I'm absolutely gutted to see it still breathing so I picked it up feeling a heart beat and dispatched it with a broken neck I suppose my question is how after such a clean shot

I have to say they are tough little critters, and sometimes the close ones are the hardest, I have shot them to 50yds off a bipod when they have been on sweet chestnut and they have been clean kills, but like you have had occasions when I have needed a couple of shots on close ones ie 7 or 8yds, probably over penetration issues. Over penetrative was my first thought as I heard the pellet hit the back stop behind. Never had one like that from such a placed shot in all the time I have been shooting was a bit of a shock, like you I have placed 50 yard shots from a rest and not a twitch

Nothing wrong with that, same setup as my regd .22. Back in July I took one off a feeder at 12 yds it lay on the ground for about 10 mins then tried to run off, the pellet had bounced off its head, the next one didn't , as I said tough little critters. Rog

they are hard to kill if the pellet is not spot on .
I shot one in the trap at point blank and need a second shot .

I shot one through the head and it clung to a branch, my mate discharged a 12 bore shotty on it and it still held on. Eventually it bled to death through perforated ear drums.

Dead squirrels often dangle by one foot.
Shot 3 on a feeder this afternoon all shot through the middle of the Brain and stone dead.
Don't know how you can have over penetration issues if they have a wound channel through their brain?
Never bounced one of a head, sounds like a periferal near miss.
