squirrel habbits

Wed Feb 17, 2016 6:12 pm

I am lucky to have a permission with 3 big woods. Some days I can shoot half a dozen squirrels in an hour. Other days I don't see one all day.
My question is ; where do they go? They must eat and I cover the favourite places but some days, not a sniff.

They dont like the rain and prefer to curl up and sleep.

i think the main problem with squirrels is, if they dont move then they dont give their position away, and we dont see em.
when they're active its no problem, but when they decide to keep still you'd think the woods were empty.
i used to use a primos caller (til i broke it) :x on these sort of days. i pratted about when i first had it trying to do all the calls on the cd, and there's vids on youtube where some people are so good they can have a conversation with em, but i stick to shooting em rather than negotiating  i found it easier to just give it 2 basic taps that actually sound like a squirrel bark, and then scan the trees again. it was surprising how many times you'd notice a tail flick and give its position away.
i think some days we just have to accept they've not been too active, and when they have moved we've been looking t'other way

Yes, I think it is the cold today. I would agree they don't like rain.
Just annoying when I take time off work and nothing shows.
Makes the good days more enjoyable.

Hi Chaps

One of the best ways to establish squizzer behaviour, is to use trailcams. Set them up on feeders and download the memory cards every couple of days. I find they have a pattern - but this will be different in different places. I shoot woods where the squirrels are out morning and evening, and some where its just morning and no evening. I dont know why, but then I dont need to in order to use that information to make sure I'm in place at the right time

I have sort of trained our greys to turn up when at roughly the same time.
I use a small feeder which holds a cupful of nuts.
Its filled every evening in the dark.
Consequently with bird/squirrel activity its normally empty by 11 a.m. and the squirrels know this.
As a result most turn up at first light .
We have not got a massive population here but have had 29 on this feeder with the majority shot in the first half hour.
