mil-dot ranging

So I am trying to learn and teach myself the art of ranging without a rangefinder but I am a little stuck! I have this formula (size of target (inches)/No. of Mil-Dots X 27.77 (for yards)) so I tested this out in my garden on two objects

a) A 4" wide fence post

b) A pigeon target 7" high

so the first time on the fence post i got;

4/1.6 X 27.77 = 69.425 yards - my garden is 35 yards so no possible

the pigeon was;

7/3.2 X 27.77 = 60.75 yards - again not possible!

where am i going wrong?

my scope is set up for 35 yards X 6 magnification and has 1/2 mil-dots, do I need to take into consideration the magnification and if so how?

which scope do you have ? I guess you know the dot spacing is only 1/2 a Mildot at a specific magnification ie a Hawke with a 10x-Half-Mil-Dot reticle needs to be on 10X mag

Hi gdavison, I have an MTC OPTISAN HX 4-12X40AO scope. Don't think there was a manual but I'll check the box

Figured it out! Thanks to the information you gave me I checked the box and found a piece of paper that states 'ranging magnification: max. magnification' I will practice after work tomorrow now.

Thanks again

Excellent website, had some fun using it and at least I am doing it right. The app looks like it could be useful too
