16mm diameter barrel

Anybody on here fitted a 16mm diameter barrel to an S510? And if so did you have it fully floating or use an eight shaped front bracket?

I have installed 16mm LW barrels on two S500's that I use for FT. IMHO the small 10mm tang (the part of the barrel in the receiver) does not provide enough support to float the barrel. I use barrel bands on both and see no reason not to.

Thanks for the reply Terry, I have a back up plan to use a barrel band if floating fails although I've now machined the barrel down to 15mm diameter and made it a snug fit in the 15mm recess in the front of the block assembly. All the machining is done now and I've added about 1-1/4" to the overall length of the new barrel. I also made the front where the mod. fits 12mm instead of the original 10mm so today I have to bore out the Q-Tec mod. to fit. Carbon fibre tube, 20mm o/d x 1mm thick, to make the new shroud should be here today.

Larger barrels have been used in the past and fully floated. Some have also kept a over sized barrel band just in case of a knock 8-)

Jezzer, I have tried floating this barrel and it shot quite well, I was just concerned about all the weight and strain on the barrel tang and action. I do have a HFT500 that does have a floated barrel but it is a 14mm barrel with a 12mm tang and has three screws holding the barrel. Since the 16mm barrel would not fit in the shroud of the S500, I eliminated the shroud and made a muzzle piece to fit the original 20mm barrel band. The POI changed with the barrel band on but the accuracy remained the same. This barrel is a LW .177 poly.

Thanks for your input Terry, I'm taking it all on board. How long is the barrel in the photo? Mine is finished at 16-3/4" and 15mm diameter and doesn't seem to be putting much strain on the action. Rowan does a 15mm barrel band so I might pick one up at the show this coming weekend.

This barrel is 21" long. It is about 1" longer than the air tube.

Here's a picture of the barreled action.
