I see a lot of posts re "Free floating Barrel " however the engineer in me just does not get it .. thin barrel only supported by its "end" ie 7 to 10 mm of thread in a block - versus a fixed pivot point at the end of a sturdy air cylinder ?

Helps :)

In the case of PCPs, the cylinder that the barrels normaly ends up getting 'pivoted' on (as you put it) is subject to varying bends in different directions as the air in the tank empties from a fill. These distortions get transferred to the barrel via the band. In PCPs like the S200, the resonance from the firing valve acting inside the air cylinder manifests on the barrel too.
