Mole grips !!! Bloody shell won't that damage the cylinder? I can't think of a reason why it would be so tight, it should just sit on the O ring.
I take it the barrel is off? If so I would clamp the action in a soft faced vice, apply a little heat to the cylinder where it meets the block and then use a Boa strap wrench. Can you get the fill valve end off?

Thanks for all the advice guys. A vice & a lot of force got it in the end!

I had the moles on the valve end. Protected it with rubber & a rag

My hft 500 was a tad tight, I used a rubber strap used for removing jar lids, oil filters etc. The handle is plastic won`t damage the cylinder and gives you more leverage . Regards Gordon.

Are you certain it wasn't a Koni suspension strut you were trying to undo? You know.... 'Should have gone to Specsavers.'
